The history indicates the part of the examination to focus on. Asking about trauma, symptoms of pain vs irritation, loss of vision, and pattern and speed of onset. Examination includes visual acuity, optic nerve function (pupil reactions and colour vision), visual fields, eye movements and ophthalmoscopy to assess the ocular media and the retina (see box).
